Au Gres-Sims Educators
Collaborate to Receive $5,000
Innovative Educator Corps Grant
October 22, 2019
AU GRES, MI – Educators at Au Gres-Sims School District have received a $5,000 Innovative Educator Corps (IEC) Grant from the Michigan Department of Education. Jill Haag, an elementary teacher, and Luke Freeman, a secondary teacher, collaborated to draft the grant submission on behalf of the science department at Au Gres-Sims School District. This is the second year that Au Gres-Sims has received the IEC grant with the focused purpose of using the funds to initiate and lead authentic place-based STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs at Au Gres-Sims Elementary, Middle School, and High School, while partnering with the Bay-Arenac Intermediate School District to expand, replicate, and share the district’s innovative practices with other schools and programs.
The Innovative Educator Corps program was created as part of the Marshall Plan for Talent (PA 227 of 2018). Its mission is to support educators who possess specialized skills and use those skills to deploy innovative instructional programs for the purposes of replication, expansion, and dissemination across the state. Last year, former Au Gres-Sims educator, Brook Begres received the Innovative Educator Corps Grant for leading Place-based Education STEM programming at Au Gres-Sims.
Au Gres-Sims celebrates the collaborative work by Mrs. Haag and Mr. Freeman to secure a second year of grant funding for the district’s students and staff. When asked about being awarded the grant, Mrs. Haag stated, “We are extremely excited about receiving the IEC grant for a second consecutive year. These funds continue to allow us to foster incredible outdoor learning experiences for our students.” Mr. Freeman added, “The IEC grant enables students to explore science in meaningful, relevant, and hands-on experiential methods while providing modern equipment and resources for our science labs and classrooms. This extends the promotion of creative programming at Au Gres-Sims.”
