KINDERGARTEN TEACHER UPDATE FOR THE NEW YEAR

December 20, 2023

Kindergarten Parents,

It is hard to believe that we are almost at the halfway point of your son or daughter’s kindergarten year! I have visited their classroom many times during the school year and am constantly amazed by their zest for learning and the progress that they have made. They are truly a delight, full of energy and thirsty for knowledge.

Prior to the first day of school this year I contacted you with the district’s plan to cover for their assigned teacher, Mrs. Christie. The intention was to provide the best possible experience for your child by substituting with three very experienced teachers until the time that Mrs. Christie could return to school and resume her teaching role. Alas, as the saying goes, man plans and God laughs. Our carefully crafted plans have not worked out the way that we had intended. I am, however, a person who believes that in every challenge there lies an opportunity if you are just willing to look past the immediate difficulty.

The district has recently learned that Mrs. Christie will not be able to return to Au Gres-Sims this school year. Mrs. Adams has done a wonderful job of mitigating the impact of this news with your children and guiding their learning to this point in the year. As she has recently communicated, however, she is a retired teacher who yearns to spend time with her grandchildren, and she will not be returning after the winter break as the lead teacher for the classroom. We all thank Mrs. Adams for the work she has done and for graciously staying on with our district to provide continuity for your children while the district could explore alternative avenues and a more permanent solution for the rest of the 2023-2024 school year.

I am delighted today to share that update with you. Following the eagerly anticipated holiday break, Mrs. Christie’s kindergarten class will become Mrs. Holly Gordon’s kindergarten class. Mrs. Gordon is also a retired teacher, one who only left AGS at the conclusion of the 2022-2023 school year after 36 years of service to our community. Mrs. Gordon has a wealth of experience at the elementary level having taught lower elementary for many years, and completing her career as our Title I teacher, with support in literacy to grades K-5.

Mrs. Gordon will become the lead teacher for the kindergarten class starting in January. She will be the primary point of contact moving forward for your student’s kindergarten class. We appreciate Mrs. Gordon helping us in our time of need and look forward to her return to Au Gres-Sims. She too has a couple of retired responsibilities and will have a few weeks that she will need to be gone. Thankfully, Mrs. Adams will be able to return during those times, providing your children with her familiar face and wealth of knowledge and classroom experience. Below is a schedule for the classroom teacher for January through the end of the school year in June.

  • Jan. 3 - Feb. 8: Mrs. Gordon
  • Feb. 13 - 14: Mrs. Adams
  • Feb. 15 - 16: TBD
  • Feb. 19 - Mar. 22: Mrs. Gordon
  • Mar. 25 - Mar. 28: Mrs. Adams
  • Apr. 8: TBD (prior week is Spring Break)
  • Apr. 9 - 19: Mrs. Gordon
  • Apr. 22 - May 3: Mrs. Adams
  • May 6 - 23: Mrs. Gordon
  • May 24: Mrs. Adams
  • May 28 - June 6 (last day of school): Mrs. Gordon
We recognize that change can be difficult, but in this case it is necessary. The good news is, the change that will occur when we return from break will be to that of a very familiar face at AGS. We will hold a parent meet and greet with Mrs. Gordon on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 6pm to further assist with the transition. If you have any questions in the meantime you may direct them to me (mingc@ags-schools.org), Mr. Zeien (zeienc@ags-schools.org), or to Mrs. Gordon (gordonh@ags-schools.org).

Sincerely,

Christopher G. Ming

Superintendent
